In Week 2 of MAETY3, we were presented with the challenge of creating an infographic, an image that communicates something difficult to understand, though visuals to simplify the geographical, statistical, or conceptual matter. We were asked to use Adobe Illustrator to produce this infographic. Having used Adobe Photoshop last week, I must admit, that having that Adobe background knowledge really helped me with the creative process. That’s not to say however, that I didn’t struggle with the Illustrator tools and manipulating images and text, but it definitely made the process smoother.

I decided to focus on something that hits very close to home and something that I studied this spring in MSU’s online course, EAD 830: The Racial Achievement Gap. I wanted to use statistics and research to prove that a racial achievement gap exists and that it should be a priority for teachers to wake up and address the inequalities that exist in our schools. The infographic is really meant for teachers and school staff to learn about the inequalities and to understand what changes we can make in ourselves to support our disadvantaged students and communities. My image consists of two main parts: the “doom and gloom” reality that our disadvantaged students experience and the uplifting, positive changes that we can make to narrow the gap for our students, and really, our country’s future.

I kept this quote from Sparks of Genius’ Ch. 5 about “Abstracting” in mind when creating this infographic:

“As physicist and inventor Mitchell Wilson wrote half-century ago ‘…You don’t have to be able to understand very complicated things. It’s just opposite. You have to be able to see what looks like the most complicated thing in the world and in a flash, find the underlying simplicity. That’s what you need; a talent for simplicity.’ ”
